Aberystwyth University was one of the first UK universities to establish an office of Development and Alumni Relations in the
late 80’s. When its first Director left
the University in 2008 to take up another position, the Vice Chancellor asked
Brakeley to carry out a Review of the function and advise on the potential for
future development.
The
Brakeley Review suggested that there was scope for a more ambitious approach to
Development on the part of the University and recommended additional investment
in staff and the preparation of a plan for a Campaign. Brakeley provided the services of an Interim
Development Director for twelve months to prepare the ground for a sustainable
development function within the University.
During that period staff were recruited, and an
outline Case for Support was drafted and tested on an external audience of
(mainly) alumni in the business world.
The ensuing report of this Study suggested that a campaign for a
specific academic project in an area of excellence would be most likely to
stimulate corporate and individual major gift support. This advice has been accepted by the
University and planning is proceeding.
The
University has loyal and enthusiastic alumni and the Alumni Relations programme
has been strengthened over the last year.
On Brakeley’s advice, the University is also planning to relaunch its
Annual Giving Programme.
“Brakeley
has given us confidence to invest more heavily in Development and Alumni
Relations and project our academic
strengths. They have helped us put the
essential building blocks in place and given us the ability to move forward
with what I believe will be a sustainable activity”
Noel Lloyd,
Vice Chancellor; July 2009
