Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden

Chalmers first engaged Brakeley in 1993 to explore the possibility of fundraising in a systematic way. An initial internal study led to a feasibility and planning study for a capital campaign. The campaign began with a goal of 250 million Swedish crowns and altogether 340 million was raised during the course of their four-and-a-half year Brakeley-managed campaign. During this period, the University established a development and alumni office and this campaign was the first true capital campaign in Sweden. The alumni contributed significantly to the campaign, both personally and as the key to much of the corporate support, which accounted for 70% of funds raised.

The development team has continued since the end of the campaign and Brakeley subsequently made recommendations about the whole area of external relations in a post-campaign study. In 2000, the University Foundation decided to invest large amounts of its own capital in three new academic areas and a second campaign is now going ahead with consulting help from Brakeley.

“Brakeley’s advice has been critical to all our successes in fundraising and their consultants have shown great sensitivity in adapting their approach to Sweden.”

Johan Carlsten, Vice Rector, Chalmers.
