Umeå University,
Sweden
Umeå, 650 km
north of Stockholm, is the chief administrative city of Sweden’s
Norrland region. The thirty-eight year old university, Sweden’s fifth
oldest, has been a significant factor in the development of the economy
in Northern Sweden. A third of the 26,000 students come from outside
Norrland. Some academic areas, notably molecular biology, have an
international reputation. Although government-funded, the University
wished to broaden its income base and, in 1997, invited Brakeley to
advise.
Brakeley undertook a Study
and advised the University that success in fundraising could be
achieved provided that both local and national support could be
mobilised and that a volunteer leader with a national and international
profile was enlisted. Göran Lindahl, then CEO of ABB, who already
knew Brakeley’s work, was approached and agreed to act as Chairman for
the Campaign Committee, helping to recruit a strong team of business
and community leaders with Norrland connections.
Brakeley set up and managed
the campaign, appointing a Swedish national as director and providing
supporting consultancy. Over a two-year period, following six months of
preparation, gifts totalling €9.4 million (SEK 86.5 million) were
received to support developments in the areas of Life Science, Man -
Machine – Interaction, Ecological Sustainability, and ‘the Social
Neighbourhood’ (Education and Business). The campaign greatly raised
the profile of the University, particularly in Southern Sweden and
Stockholm, and strengthened both its municipal and business
connections. Completed within budget, with a yield of €9 raised for
every €1 spent, the campaign also established a continuing development
capability in the University.
“Through two changes of
university leadership Brakeley’s professionalism and encouragement
sustained Umeå University’s fundraising activity. The campaign
provided us with the opportunity to finance essential academic
initiatives. Equally valuable is the expanded circle of friendship that
it has brought to us. The competence introduced by our friends at
Brakeley continues to serve us well.”
Inge-Bert Täljedal,
Former Rector, Umeå Universitet.
