Major
General Surat Sandhu, is an International Consultant based in India. Born in Malaysia he
completed his schooling there and then moved, completed his graduation and
joined the Indian Army where he did his masters degree in Defence Studies and
Business Administration. He speaks English, Punjabi, Hindi and a little Malay.
After
a successful career spanning 34 years in the army, General Sandhu took
premature retirement to be the Chief Executive of a leading national charity,
HelpAge India.
During his four-year tenure General Sandhu raised the profile of the charity to
make it a household name and tripled the fundraising. He also started his own
consultancy and has worked with organizations in India,
Kenya, Nigeria, Sri Lanka
and the UK
with services ranging from management to fundraising consultancy.
He
was Chair of South Asian Fundraising Group (2005-2009), New Delhi when he successfully raised the
profile of Fundraising in developing countries.
His consulting clients included PATH and Kusuma Foundation in India, and Plantation Human Development Trust in
Colombo and Oxfam in the United Kingdom. He has help
strategise, plan and implement Fundraising for many major NGOs in South Asia. He has also been a fundraising trainer and
has spoken at numerous international conferences/workshops at Institute of Fundraising
annual convention, London and at Resource
Alliance events in Bangkok, Johannesburg,
Kuala Lumpur, Taipei,
Manila, Colombo
and in India.
