Vanessa Bowcock joined Brakeley in 2007 with over ten
years fundraising experience with leading non-profit organisations in the UK. Vanessa was
born in the North West of England and educated at King Alfred’s College, Winchester where she
studied Drama, Theatre and Television.
Vanessa’s commercial experience, before moving into
the non-profit sector, includes work as an education account manager and on new
business development with Reuters Ltd for two years and previously as an
account manager with a small retail company.
From 1997 to August 2001, Vanessa worked for the
Labour Party on face to face fundraising with major donors, developing major
gift fundraising and business liaison into the regions of the Labour Party. She
devised and managed all aspects of several high profile fundraising events and
secured sponsorship income. She was also involved in event management,
fundraising and campaigning for the 2001 General Election Campaign, the 1999
Scottish Assembly Election in addition to local elections.
From 2001 to 2004 she was Head of Charitable Giving
for the Royal Academy of Arts. During that time she managed a team of seven and
a budget of £1.2 million. Her team was responsible for generating income from
individuals, trusts and foundations and legacies. Her accomplishments include
doubling Patron recruitment in a period
of two years, increasing overall income by over £106k from the first to second
year and increasing Gift Aid take-up by 10% (to 48%) from major gift donors.
She also implemented a Legacy Strategy and devised and implemented a Higher
Level Giving Strategy for upgrading donors. She has extensive knowledge and
experience of relationship development with senior volunteers and of forming
and motivating fundraising committees and boards.
In 2003 Vanessa spoke at the Institute of Fundraising
Conference about Major Gift programmes. Since
then she has provided consultancy services to UK charities including St
Martin-in-the-Fields capital campaign and the Royal Academy of Arts.
Since joining Brakeley, Vanessa has provided interim
management for the New London Orchestra, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office –
Shanghai Expo 2010 and Headington School in addition to working with the Topolski
Memoir, YHA, Transparency International (UK) and the Irish Alliance for Europe.
Vanessa has travelled around with world, working in
the US and Australia and has volunteer
experience with an international human rights charity.
